Niuafo'ou
Also known as Tin Can Island, this place is famous for its unusual method of mail delivery. For many years, the mail was dispatched in tins wrapped in oilcloth and thrown overboard from passing ships. Swimmers collected the tins and took new ones out to the ships.
Nowadays there is a large collector demand for these covers. To this day, there is no wharf on the island.
Unstable and volcanic, a massive eruption in 1946 saw the population removed, though many returned in 1958. A miniature sheet issued in 1990 shows the panoramic lake that now fills the volcano. Almost a circle, the lake is 275 ft deep and 870ft above sea level and now has its own islets!
