FIJI OVERPRINTS

1. Firstly an apology for adding to the confusion. In my previous explanation I referred to the two version of the “2 cent on 1 cent” as having large XX and small xx. This is not correct. There is a first and second printing, both have small xx, but the size of the “2” varies by a millimeter. Printing Two has the larger “2” and was included in our initial, Part a (4), sending. Printing One was in our Part b sending of 8 stamps. Without this knowledge, these two overprints are very hard to distinguish.

2. We mentioned there would be another batch in this Warbler. This batch of 6 contains 4 reprints of previously supplied combinations, but the space between the “c” and the “XX” varies by a millimeter.There is also a “Printer’s Mistake” where only 1000 stamps were printed - 20c XX on 6c with a space of 1.5 mm between c and XX. And some columns of the sheet have the second X printed over the perforation. And finally there is genuine new value of 20c xxx on 23c. If you really want this lot the current price for the 6 is $50.00.

3. Apart from all this there are at least 15 so-called varieties, caused by sloppy printing.

PACIFIC STAMPS POLICY ON THESE FIJI OVERPRINTS

If you are a real specialist collector, you could describe this situation as sheer heaven. Most of our clients are not Specialists but still serious Collectors who like to build a nice complete collection. We have also noticed that Gibbons Stamp Monthly published two articles on these overprints last year, but they would now be out of date. And we have not yet seen any listing in Stanley Gibbons Catalogues. Album Manufacturers also have a dilemma. Seven Seas in Australia will not cater for the range of varieties, but they will almost certainly publish a Album page for a simplified set. With this in mind we have decided to stock and sell a simplified set which currently consists of 12 stamps as follows:

1c XX on 6c, 1c xx on 6c, 2c xx on 1c, 2c XX on 6c, 3c xx on 1c, 4c xx on 1c, 4c XX on 6c,

18c xx on 6c, 18c XX on 6c, 20c xx on 6c, 20c XX on 6c, 20c xxx on 23c. The current Price is $38.00.

This ignores 6 of these hard to spot differences. Those collectors who want to go along with this only need the 20c/23c at the cost of 50 cents to add to their previous purchases of Parts a and b. We will supply the other variations while stocks last. I hope to produce a final list of singles next Warbler. All this is subject to there being no more significant additions.
